complete ledgend, luv his speach b4 every lesson abowt how 'this was a school for failures'. as far as i no he teaches every subject. haha
"dry up, your like a wet weekend", "you stick out like a saw thumb", was a rare treat to have a lesson covered by him after he retired when he uses phrases like these. legend
'I've forgotten more then you know!'. a great teacher who expects hard graft
I was taught by R Simmonds back in the early 90's. Hard taskmaster and difficult to please, demands respect from students and receives it. Has an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of his subjects and is an excellent teacher. Good to hear he's still teaching on an off and the new generation are being exposed to someone with a quick wit.
excellent teacher- retired about 5 years ago i think? but he keeps coming back to taunt everyone!! taght my mum, auntie, uncle, me and my sister and calls us all by the same name. memory like an elephant!!
Didn't get a great start with Mr Simmonds.. After just a month of year 7 chemistry, I had a perfect test paper back, marked "99% - No-one's Perfect." Didnt appreciate that at the time, but after a while in the school, one realises that Roger S is another teacher who is easy to mock in lower school, but has a serious bank of knowledge and is a really interesting person. And yes, I stuck out like a sore thumb as well
A cracking one I've heard on the grape vine is that the whole of his class spelt his name wrong on the front of an end of year test - he changed every single one of them. I'm pretty sure that they all spelt his name with one M and not MM. I thought it was quite amusing.
Oh my days!! What a character - I love this guy to bits. His lessons were the best I ever had and by the time I'd got my books out I was always roaring with laughter. Apparently, I've got "more mouth than trousers," and I'll never forget when he gave me a sheet I replied "cheers," he then turned around and said: "cheers, what do you mean cheers? We're not in a pub!" We'd always talk to him for half an hour about the rugby. Fair play to him though, a very intelligent fella and it's sad that he won't be back.
He's the type of teacher who 'retires' but keeps on coming bak. he uses phrases such as 'your just as useful as a chocolate teapot' which is really lame. he can teach almost every subject and he claims he knows everything about everything. persoanlly, he's quite annoying.
A bit of a legend during my time at caerleon. Never forget the time he put a line through half of my school books just because I used a biro instead of an ink pen!! I think that Soccer AM have used him as inspiration for one of their characters!!!!!!!
"Rowles - down the front!" Ahhh... those were the days. For me he was the best teacher I ever had.As well as being able to control a class he was an excellent teacher and wouldnt stand any nonsense. With a cutting line in witty,non-PC repartis you darent step out of line for fear of the impending humiliation. The other teachers could have learned a lot from him even when I was there (87-93) - at least he had respect & I'd buy him a beer any day, he'd have you in stitches! The Legend lives on.
What an awsome teacher. Ask anyone who has been taught by him and they have all been told that they are about as useful as a chocolate teapot!
