Although he was never my 'official' English teacher, Mr Hodgart encouraged me to read literature when I decided not to continue with English in 6th Year at secondary school. My main memory is that he gave me 'Life of Galileo' by Brecht to read and which I very much enjoyed. Subsequently, as a student at Glasgow University, I had the opportunity to see this play. It was a brilliant and very moving performance and was something that I would have never considered going to see but for Mr Hodgart.
